Overview
Analgesia is the relief or absence of pain without the loss of consciousness, achieved through agents or interventions that reduce the perception of painful stimuli. It is a central goal of pharmaceutical science, because effective pain control is essential to medical care, surgery, and the management of acute and chronic conditions. Analgesics work through diverse mechanisms: some, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, reduce the production of inflammatory mediators that sensitize pain receptors; others, such as opioids, act on receptors in the nervous system to dampen the transmission and perception of pain; and additional approaches modulate pain pathways through other molecular targets. The development of new analgesic and anti-inflammatory compounds, the characterization of their activity, and the exploration of non-pharmacological and complementary strategies are active areas within Advanced Pharmaceutical Science And Technology. Research relevant to this field includes the discovery and evaluation of novel analgesic and anti-inflammatory drug candidates, the assessment of analgesic activity in natural products such as plant-derived extracts, and investigation of mechanisms by which the body's own pain-relieving systems, including endogenous opioid pathways, can be engaged. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to analgesia within pharmaceutical science and technology.
