Overview
Air pollution is the contamination of indoor or outdoor air by physical, chemical, or biological agents that alter the natural composition of the atmosphere and harm human health, ecosystems, and the built environment. Major pollutants include particulate matter, classified by aerodynamic diameter into coarse, fine, and ultrafine fractions that penetrate the respiratory tract to varying depths, along with gaseous species such as nitrogen and sulfur oxides, ozone, carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds, and hydrogen sulfide. Sources span industrial emissions, combustion of fossil fuels, traffic, waste management, and tobacco smoke, including second-hand and aerosolized exposure. Exposure is linked to respiratory and cardiovascular disease, exacerbation of asthma, and broader effects on vulnerable populations, and its assessment relies on monitoring of pollutant concentrations and evaluation of associated health risks. Mitigation involves emission control, sustainable urban planning, waste management, and policies such as smoking bans. Themes in the associated literature include air pollution as a co-factor in health outcomes among older adults, contributors to asthma in urban settings, fine and ultrafine particle pollution before and after a smoking ban, environmental and health-risk assessment of particulate matter and hydrogen sulfide around dumpsites and dusty fields, the cardiovascular effects of involuntary smoking and vaping, and sustainable solid-waste management. This journal publishes peer-reviewed research relevant to environmental exposures, air quality, and their effects on human health.
