Overview

Influenza is an acute respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses, enveloped RNA viruses of the family Orthomyxoviridae whose segmented genome and surface hemagglutinin and neuraminidase glycoproteins underlie antigenic drift and shift. These changes drive seasonal epidemics and occasional pandemics, with subtypes such as H1N1 of particular concern. Infection produces fever, cough, sore throat, myalgia, and fatigue, and can cause severe morbidity and mortality, especially in older adults, young children, and people with chronic conditions. Research in this area addresses the epidemiology and management of seasonal outbreaks in long-term care facilities, surveillance and serological evidence of influenza A in animal hosts including camelids and equine populations, and zoonotic and one-health dimensions of transmission. Studies also examine vaccine immune responses and immunoglobulin dynamics, host factors such as vitamin D status in H1N1 infection, and non-pharmaceutical measures including masking and school reopening during co-circulation with other respiratory pathogens. The corpus reflects the close scientific intersection of influenza with the COVID-19 pandemic, where comparisons of respiratory viral transmission, immunity, and control were prominent. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on the virology, epidemiology, prevention, and clinical management of influenza and related respiratory infections.
