Overview
Free radicals are highly reactive molecules with unpaired electrons that can damage cellular components, while oxidative stress occurs when the production of these reactive species overwhelms the body's antioxidant defenses. Research published in Antioxidant Activity examines this imbalance through diverse experimental approaches. Studies have investigated natural antioxidant sources including tea polysaccharides with hepatoprotective properties, cashew apple varieties harvested in Mexico, Surinamese medicinal plants with adaptogenic characteristics, and Argemone mexicana aerial parts extracted in different solvents. The journal has published work on the biochemical mechanisms underlying oxidative damage, including methylglyoxal formation from glucose metabolites and superoxide anion radical generation during cross-linking reactions. Applied research has explored antioxidant interventions in disease models, examining formulations in ulcerative colitis, cardiovascular disorders induced by L-NAME and high-fat diets, and metabolic syndrome management through micronutrient supplementation. Additional studies have assessed antioxidant compounds in cell-based systems, including HepG2 cells and H9c2 cardiomyoblast cells exposed to hydrogen peroxide-induced stress. This body of work addresses the critical role of oxidative stress in chronic disease pathology and evaluates potential therapeutic strategies through both natural product screening and mechanistic investigation of redox processes.
