Overview

Protein structure refers to the three-dimensional arrangement of atoms in a protein molecule, typically described at primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary levels, which determines the protein's biological function. Research published in this journal addresses protein structure through multiple complementary approaches. Bioinformatics methods enable computational prediction and analysis of protein domains, as demonstrated in studies examining phylogenetic conservation of RNA-binding proteins and structural features of DNA-binding plant transcription factors. Molecular investigations have explored how specific structural elements, such as disulfide bonds in pentacysteine domains, mediate protein dimerization essential for DNA binding. Clinical applications include structural analysis of disease-related protein variants, examining how single amino acid substitutions affect protein function in conditions like phenylketonuria and hereditary cancer syndromes. Computational modeling has been applied to understand protein-ligand interactions, including antifungal peptide binding to fungal proteins and antibody-antigen recognition in viral infections. These studies collectively demonstrate that understanding protein structure is fundamental to disease diagnosis, therapeutic development, and biotechnological applications, bridging basic molecular biology with translational medicine and industrial
