Overview

Adolescents are individuals in the developmental period between childhood and adulthood, typically spanning the second decade of life, during which rapid physical, hormonal, neurocognitive, and psychosocial changes reshape behavior, identity, and emotional regulation. Adolescence is marked by maturation of the prefrontal cortex relative to limbic reward systems, heightened sensitivity to peer influence, and the emergence of autonomy, all of which bear on risk-taking, identity formation, and vulnerability to psychiatric disorder. Many mental-health conditions first manifest during this stage, making adolescence a critical window for prevention and intervention. Research relevant to this topic examines acceptance and commitment therapy for addiction-susceptible adolescents in cyberspace, the role of autobiographical memory and mental functions in identity development and the prevention of identity diffusion, aggressiveness, and depression, reproductive and sexual health knowledge among adolescents, mental stress among adolescents seeking asylum, and the effects of physical activity on sleep in adolescents. Related work addresses adolescent obesity and asthma, hypertension, and sexuality education. Collectively these studies span the psychological, behavioral, and physical health of this age group. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on adolescent mental health, development, and behavior, including identity, risk behavior, therapeutic intervention, and the psychosocial and physical transitions central to Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
