Overview
The cytoplasm is the gel-like internal compartment of a cell, bounded by the plasma membrane and, in eukaryotes, excluding the nucleus, within which the organelles are suspended. It comprises the cytosol, an aqueous solution of ions, metabolites, and proteins; the cytoskeleton of microfilaments, microtubules, and intermediate filaments that provides structure, shape, and intracellular transport; and the membrane-bound organelles in which compartmentalized biochemistry occurs. The cytoplasm is the site of numerous metabolic pathways, including glycolysis and protein synthesis, and it mediates molecular trafficking, signal transduction, and the spatial regulation of cellular processes. Cytoplasmic localization is itself a regulatory mechanism: the retention or sequestration of proteins in the cytoplasm, rather than their entry into the nucleus, can control cell-cycle progression, senescence, and signaling. Research in related cell and molecular biology examines the cytoplasmic retention of regulatory proteins and its effect on senescence and tumor formation, organelle development such as proplastid and chloroplast formation in plant meristems, nanoparticle-induced changes in cellular structure, and proteomic and physiological responses to stress. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research in cell biology, molecular biology, and pathology in which cytoplasmic structure, organelles, and the spatial organization of cellular processes are studied, reflecting the cytoplasm's central role in metabolism, transport, and cellular regulation.
