Overview

Crohn's disease is a chronic, relapsing inflammatory bowel disease characterized by transmural, granulomatous inflammation that can affect any segment of the gastrointestinal tract from mouth to anus, classically in a discontinuous, skip-lesion pattern with a predilection for the terminal ileum. It arises from dysregulated mucosal immune responses to the gut microbiota in genetically susceptible individuals, producing abdominal pain, diarrhea, weight loss, and complications such as strictures, fistulae, and abscesses. Diagnosis integrates clinical, endoscopic, histological, and imaging findings, and management targets symptom control and mucosal healing.
