Overview
DNA sequence analysis is the examination and interpretation of the order of bases in DNA to extract biological meaning, including the identification of genes, mutations, and regulatory regions, the comparison of sequences within and between organisms, and the reconstruction of evolutionary and functional relationships. It combines laboratory sequencing with computational and statistical methods to align sequences, detect variation, and infer structure and history. Work in this area includes the comparative analysis of orthologous genes across species, such as the chromosomal and functional clustering of divergent human and mouse orthologs in relation to their compositional features, and the investigation of molecular evolutionary mechanisms in partially sequenced viral genes. Applied analysis extends to the detection of polymorphisms, the characterisation of synthesised nucleic-acid libraries, and the use of functional nucleic-acid techniques for purposes such as the detection of genetically modified organisms. Significance lies in transforming raw sequence into knowledge about gene function, genetic variation, ancestry, and the organisation of genomes. Principal sub-areas include sequence alignment and comparison, variant and polymorphism detection, comparative and evolutionary genomics, compositional and structural analysis of sequences, and the bioinformatic tools that underpin the interpretation of DNA data across biological and biomedical research.
