Overview
Nucleotides are the monomeric building blocks of nucleic acids, each composed of a nitrogenous base, a five-carbon sugar (ribose in RNA, deoxyribose in DNA), and one or more phosphate groups. The bases adenine, guanine, cytosine, thymine, and uracil pair specifically to encode genetic information, and nucleotides polymerize via phosphodiester bonds to form DNA and RNA, underpinning replication, transcription, and translation. Beyond their structural role they serve as energy carriers such as ATP, as signaling molecules, and as enzymatic cofactors, and their sequence and composition determine genome organization and fidelity. Research relevant to this area includes compositional and chromosomal clustering of divergent human-mouse orthologs, molecular evolution of heat-shock-protein gene homologues in plant viruses, template-independent synthesis of nucleic-acid libraries, screening for polymorphisms in catalase-gene exons, fractal organization of biological sequence information, microRNA regulation of gene expression, and microfluidic nucleic-acid assays for cancer screening. The journal publishes peer-reviewed work, grouped here under DNA And RNA Research, addressing nucleotide composition, nucleic-acid synthesis and evolution, sequence polymorphism, and gene regulation, connecting studies of the molecular building blocks of the genome to the structure, function, and analysis of nucleic acids in biology, evolution, and diagnostics.
