Overview
Metabolic processes are the enzyme-catalyzed chemical reactions through which cells extract energy from nutrients, synthesize the molecules required for growth and maintenance, and dispose of waste. They are conventionally divided into catabolism, the degradation of carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins to release energy captured as ATP and reducing equivalents, and anabolism, the energy-requiring construction of cellular components. These reactions are organized into interconnected pathways governed by Enzymes, cofactors, and regulatory signals, and their balance maintains homeostasis; their disruption underlies metabolic disease, cancer, and degenerative conditions. Research relevant to this topic includes the role of redox Enzymes in free-radical scavenging, the targeting of altered cell metabolism in chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, the influence of nutrients on diabetes, and amino acid metabolism in the pathogenesis and treatment of liver disease. Related work examines metabolic reprogramming in solid and stem-cell tumor models, circadian regulation of metabolism in cancer stem cells, metabolomic approaches to assessing environmental exposure, ion-channel effects on cold-induced metabolic responses, and microbiota contributions to dietary metabolism, alongside enzyme-driven plant stress responses. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on Enzymes and the metabolic processes they catalyze, spanning biochemical mechanisms, regulation, and their relevance to health and disease.
