Overview

Cervical cancer is a malignancy of the cells of the cervix, the lower, narrow portion of the uterus that opens into the vagina, and is caused predominantly by persistent infection with high-risk types of the human papillomavirus (HPV). It ranks among the most common cancers affecting women worldwide and frequently produces no symptoms in its early stages, so it can cause serious harm if not detected and treated early. Because the disease typically arises through identifiable precancerous changes of the cervical epithelium, it is largely preventable through HPV vaccination and regular screening, with treatment of established cancer involving surgery, radiotherapy including brachytherapy, and chemotherapy. In a context concerned with women's reproductive and gynecological health and biomarkers, research in this field centers on screening, detection, and tumor biology. Published studies examine the uptake and determinants of cervical cancer screening across varied populations, including hospital staff, rural communities, and refugee women, and assess the prevalence of abnormal cervical cytology. Other work investigates molecular and cellular features of the disease, including the role of HPV in virus-induced carcinogenesis, signaling pathways such as PI3K/mTOR/AKT in cervical tumors, and immunohistochemical markers in intraepithelial and benign cervical lesions, alongside comparative treatment outcomes and broader studies of tumor cell biology and approaches to cancer prevention, reflecting the journal's interest in markers relevant to detection and prognosis.
