Overview
Blood platelet disorders are conditions that affect the number or function of platelets, the small cell fragments in blood that are essential for clotting and for stopping bleeding. They fall into two broad groups: quantitative disorders, in which platelet counts are too low (thrombocytopenia) or too high (thrombocytosis), and qualitative disorders, in which platelets are present in normal numbers but do not function properly. Causes range from inherited defects and autoimmune destruction to bone-marrow disease, infections, medications and the consumption of platelets in clotting disorders. Clinically, these conditions can produce a spectrum of symptoms, from easy bruising, prolonged bleeding and small skin haemorrhages when platelets are too few, to an increased risk of abnormal clotting when they are too many or overactive. Diagnosis relies on the full blood count, blood-film review and specialised laboratory tests of platelet function and coagulation. As a journal covering blood and cancer, Hematology and Oncology Research publishes work across haematology and the broader study of bleeding, clotting and blood-cell disorders, including the laboratory diagnosis of immune-mediated and inherited bleeding conditions and the haematological complications of malignancy. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to platelet disorders and the wider field of haematology.
