Overview
Blood vessels are the tubular conduits of the circulatory system that convey blood throughout the body, comprising arteries that carry blood away from the heart, veins that return it, and the capillary networks where exchange of oxygen, nutrients, and waste occurs. Their walls are organized into layers of endothelium, smooth muscle, and connective tissue whose composition varies with function, conferring the elasticity of large arteries, the contractile control of arterioles, and the thin permeable structure of capillaries. The endothelium is metabolically active, regulating vascular tone, permeability, coagulation, and leukocyte trafficking. Formation of new vessels through angiogenesis is essential to development, wound healing, and tissue repair, and is also co-opted in pathology; in oncology, tumor angiogenesis driven by mediators such as angiopoietins and endothelial markers supports neoplastic growth and is a focus of biomarker and therapeutic investigation. Vascular dysfunction contributes to a broad range of disease, including occlusive and malformation disorders such as moyamoya, microthrombosis and fibrin-network alterations in systemic illness, and impaired perfusion of end organs. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research touching on vascular biology, angiogenesis and its markers in malignancy, microvascular and thrombotic pathology, and the structural and functional roles of the vasculature in health and disease.
