Overview
Hemoglobin is the iron-containing protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to the body's tissues and helps return carbon dioxide to the lungs. Each hemoglobin molecule is made of four subunits, each holding a heme group whose iron atom binds oxygen, giving blood its red colour and its oxygen-carrying capacity. Hemoglobin concentration is one of the most commonly measured clinical parameters, used to diagnose and monitor anaemia and a wide range of haematological conditions. Inherited variants and disorders of hemoglobin, such as sickle cell disease and thalassaemia, alter its structure or production and cause significant disease. Research published in this journal addresses hemoglobin biology and disorders directly, including a case of compound heterozygous hemoglobin SD disease presenting as a sickle cell crisis in pregnancy, an analysis of the hemoglobin concentration in pregnancy below which maternal or fetal adverse effects increase, a study of reduced physical activity in patients with thalassaemia, and an assessment of biochemical and haematological markers of iron status in a population. Further work reviews the challenges of caring for sickle cell disease. These studies reflect the journal's engagement with hemoglobin's role in oxygen transport, anaemia, and inherited blood disorders. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to hemoglobin and disorders of red blood cells.
