Overview

Nursing is the health profession concerned with the care of individuals, families, and communities to promote and maintain health, prevent illness, and support recovery and well-being. Grounded in both scientific knowledge and a holistic, person-centred ethos, nursing encompasses direct patient care, health education, emotional and psychosocial support, and coordination across the care team, and includes specialised fields such as paediatric, critical, psychiatric, and community nursing. As a research discipline, nursing examines clinical practice, the theoretical frameworks that guide care, the well-being and education of nurses, and the organisation of nursing work. Research in this area addresses theoretical models such as contextual action theory in nursing and holistic nursing in intensive care, the psychological well-being, anxiety, and depression of nursing students and their attitudes toward diverse populations, workforce issues including registered-nurse turnover and the use of unlicensed assistive personnel, and the integration of technology to enhance home and oncological care. Further strands address risk management in drug administration, geriatric care and discharge planning, and the use of innovative interventions for people with dementia. These studies connect nursing knowledge and practice to the quality and safety of care. Nursing matters because nurses constitute a central component of the health workforce and shape patient outcomes across every setting. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on nursing practice, theory, education, and the nursing workforce.
