Blood cells are the cellular constituents of blood, comprising erythrocytes (red blood cells) that transport oxygen via hemoglobin, leukocytes (white blood cells) that mediate immune defense, and thrombocytes (platelets) that enable hemostasis. They are produced through hematopoiesis in the bone marrow and circulate in plasma, and their number, integrity, and function are central to oxygen delivery, immunity, and clotting. In transfusion medicine and hematology, blood cells are studied with particular attention to their preparation, storage, preservation, and clinical use, since the quality of stored components determines transfusion safety and efficacy.
