Overview

Emerging and re-emerging infections are infectious diseases that are either newly appearing in a population or rapidly increasing in incidence or geographic range after a period of decline. Emerging infections include diseases caused by newly identified pathogens or by known agents spreading to new hosts or regions, while re-emerging infections are previously controlled diseases that resurge, often due to factors such as antimicrobial resistance, waning immunity, or changes in surveillance. These threats arise from a combination of microbial adaptation, human behavior, global travel and trade, land-use and ecological change, and gaps in public-health infrastructure, and they place substantial strain on health systems. The COVID-19 pandemic exemplifies how a newly emerging pathogen can produce a global health crisis. Research in infection prevention addresses the surveillance, control, and management of such threats. Related peer-reviewed work in this collection includes studies on the epidemiology and clinical course of COVID-19, on knowledge, attitudes, and practices toward infection prevention and control among healthcare workers, and on the broader drivers of emerging infectious diseases. This page gathers open-access research relevant to the detection, prevention, and control of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases.
