Overview
Infectious diseases are disorders caused by pathogenic microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, that can be transmitted directly between hosts or indirectly through vectors, contaminated food and water, fomites, or airborne routes. Their study encompasses pathogen biology, modes of transmission, host immune response, clinical syndromes, and the population dynamics of outbreaks and endemic disease. Emerging and re-emerging pathogens, exemplified by SARS-CoV-2, periodically generate epidemics and pandemics that strain health systems and prompt enquiry into spillover, genomics, and biosafety, while established threats such as tuberculosis, malaria, and typhoid persist as major causes of morbidity and mortality. Prevention and control rely on vaccination, surveillance, early diagnosis, antimicrobial therapy, infection prevention and control practices in healthcare facilities, and public-health measures including hygiene and source management, with policy, reimbursement, and environmental factors such as climate change shaping disease burden. Research relevant to this area spans the emergence and re-emergence of infectious diseases, infection prevention and control during the COVID-19 pandemic, tuberculosis screening among healthcare workers, immunomonitoring approaches, coinfection, and the public-health response to outbreaks. The International Journal of Infection Prevention publishes peer-reviewed research on the epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of infectious diseases.
