Overview

Group psychotherapy is a form of psychological treatment in which one or more therapists work with several clients together at the same time. Members meet as a group to explore their difficulties, share experiences, and learn from one another, with the group itself serving as a setting in which patterns of thought, feeling, and relating can be observed and changed. The shared format offers benefits that individual therapy may not, such as a sense of belonging and reduced isolation, opportunities to practice interpersonal skills, and the chance to give and receive support and feedback. Group psychotherapy is used for a wide range of concerns and may draw on many theoretical approaches, from cognitive-behavioral to psychodynamic. As a topic within psychotherapy practice and research, group psychotherapy connects the study of therapeutic process and the dynamics of the therapeutic relationship with the particular features of working in a group. Research in the broader field examines how psychotherapeutic methods work, for whom, and under what conditions, informing the practice of both individual and group treatment. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to group psychotherapy and the broader practice of psychotherapy.
