Overview

Surgical procedures are operative interventions that use incision, excision, repair, reconstruction, or implantation to diagnose and treat disease, correct anatomical defects, and relieve symptoms. They are classified along several axes, including elective versus emergency, open versus minimally invasive, and by anatomical region and intent, whether curative, palliative, reconstructive, or diagnostic. Successful surgery depends on appropriate technique selection, perioperative management, anesthesia, and prevention of complications such as surgical site infection and venous thromboembolism. The articles collected here illustrate this breadth across specialties, including chest wall reconstruction for pectus excavatum and Poland syndrome using three-dimensional printed models, abdominal wall reinforcement with synthetic mesh after myocutaneous flap harvest in pelvic resection, ocular and thyroid operations, and pulmonary resection.
