Overview

Blood pressure is the force exerted by circulating blood against the walls of the arteries, expressed as systolic pressure during cardiac contraction over diastolic pressure during relaxation, and hypertension is the condition of persistently elevated arterial pressure above defined diagnostic thresholds. Hypertension is a leading modifiable risk factor for stroke, ischemic heart disease, heart failure, and chronic kidney disease, and it is frequently asymptomatic, making accurate measurement and surveillance essential. Pressure is determined by cardiac output and systemic vascular resistance under the control of neural, hormonal, and renal mechanisms, and most cases are primary (essential) hypertension arising from the interaction of genetic predisposition with dietary, behavioral, and environmental factors, while secondary hypertension reflects an identifiable underlying cause. Management combines dietary and lifestyle modification with pharmacotherapy, and standardized measurement, including ambulatory monitoring and dipper status, informs diagnosis and risk stratification. The subject matter examined in this area includes hypertension prevalence, awareness, and treatment across populations and adolescents, factors associated with uncontrolled high blood pressure, systolic and diastolic load on ambulatory monitoring in relation to body mass index, dietary and lifestyle effects on cardiometabolic risk, experimental renovascular hypertension, and recommended standards for blood-pressure assessment in research. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on blood pressure and hypertension.
