Overview
The bladder is the hollow, muscular organ of the urinary tract that stores urine delivered from the kidneys via the ureters until it is voided through the urethra. Its wall comprises layers of detrusor smooth muscle lined by specialized transitional epithelium, or urothelium, which together permit the bladder to distend during filling and contract during micturition under coordinated autonomic and somatic control. The bladder is subject to a wide range of disorders, including infection and inflammation, calculi, neoplasia, structural injury, and functional disturbances of storage and emptying. Research relevant to this area examines bladder injury and its laparoscopic repair, glandular and cystic forms of cystitis, and spontaneous bladder rupture, including cases following acute alcohol intoxication. Further work addresses calculi within the urinary tract and ileal conduits, the feasibility of endoscopic lithotripsy, complications of bladder irrigation, and conditions associated with schistosomiasis and haematuria. Allied strands consider the gallbladder and biliary calculi as distinct entities sharing terminology. The field connects urology, surgery, and pathology, with implications for diagnosis and operative management. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on the bladder and its disorders, including injury and repair, cystitis, calculi, and surgical complications of the urinary tract.
