Overview
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a progressive, long-term decline in kidney function resulting from sustained damage or disease, in which the kidneys become less able to filter waste, balance fluids, and regulate electrolytes and hormones. It affects large numbers of people worldwide, is commonly identified through blood tests, urine analysis, and imaging, and can progress to end-stage kidney disease with life-threatening complications if not detected and managed early. Within urology and renal-focused practice, CKD is studied in relation to its diagnosis, complications, and the wider organ systems it affects. Studies collected here examine thyroid function abnormalities and structural thyroid changes among patients with CKD and end-stage kidney disease, blood-pressure patterns such as dipper and non-dipper hypertension across disease stages, and the psychological burden of the disease, including the differentiation of depression from apathy. Molecular and hematological aspects are also represented, including gene polymorphisms, apoptosis-related genes in haemodialysis patients, and hepcidin and anemia in CKD. Additional work addresses cardiorenal signalling in heart failure, the nephrotoxicity of iodinated contrast agents and other compounds, and outcomes in patients with concurrent conditions such as diabetes, cancer, and COVID-19. Together these strands reflect CKD as a multisystem disorder of central importance to urological and renal care, where early diagnosis and management of complications shape patient outcomes.
