Overview
Epithelial cells are specialized cells that form the continuous sheets, known as epithelia, lining the external and internal surfaces of the body, including the skin, the lumina of hollow organs, glands, and the linings of blood vessels and body cavities. They are characterized by tight intercellular junctions, distinct apical and basolateral polarity, and attachment to a basement membrane, and they perform protective, secretory, absorptive, and barrier functions while regulating the passage of molecules and ions. Epithelial cells are classified by shape and layering, and their controlled proliferation, differentiation, and turnover are essential to tissue maintenance. Their dysregulation is central to carcinogenesis, since most human cancers are epithelial in origin, and to processes such as epithelial-mesenchymal transition that underlie invasion and metastasis. Research relevant to this area examines the properties of solid human tumour cells in experimental systems, the regulation of metastasis through adhesion molecules such as E-cadherin, and cellular and molecular biomarkers of inflammation and organ health. Further work addresses neoplastic transformation in glandular and cutaneous epithelium, decidualization and uterine receptivity, and cytotoxicity in cancer cell lines. The field links cell biology, oncology, and tissue physiology. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research involving epithelial cells, including tumour cell biology, adhesion and metastasis, and cellular biomarkers.
