Overview
Glucose metabolism is the set of biochemical pathways by which the body takes up, stores, and breaks down glucose to supply energy and maintain blood-sugar homeostasis, integrating processes such as glycolysis, glycogen handling, and hormonal regulation by insulin and counter-regulatory signals. Its dysregulation is central to metabolic disease, most notably type-2 diabetes mellitus, where impaired glucose regulation and insulin resistance disturb energy balance. Research in this area examines how diet and bioactive compounds influence glycaemic control, including the effects of plant-derived agents such as bitter melon on blood sugar and the postprandial impact of specific foods on glycemia and lipemia. Adipose tissue physiology and obesity are closely linked, since fat distribution and thyroid hormone status modulate metabolic regulation and the broader metabolic syndrome. Metabolomic and bioinformatic approaches characterise the molecular signatures of altered glucose handling in diabetes, while antioxidant micronutrients are studied for their role in managing metabolic dysfunction. Energy intake and its constraints also affect glucose regulation and physical performance. Research in this area defines the pathways and hormonal controls of glucose handling, investigates how nutrition, body composition, and disease alter them, and evaluates dietary and pharmacological strategies to improve glycaemic control and metabolic health.
