Overview

Low density describes a relatively small mass per unit volume of a material, density being the ratio of mass to volume and a fundamental physical property in chemistry and materials science. Materials of low density include gases, many liquids, foams, aerogels, and lightweight polymers, as well as porous and cellular solids whose void content lowers their effective density. Density depends on atomic and molecular mass, packing efficiency, crystal or amorphous structure, and, for gases, on temperature and pressure as described by the gas laws. Low-density materials are of particular interest where reduced weight, buoyancy, thermal insulation, or high surface-area-to-mass ratios are advantageous, with applications spanning energy storage, lightweight structural composites, packaging, and nanomaterials. Density differences also underpin separation and flotation techniques and the characterisation of materials through measurements of specific gravity and porosity. In polymer science, controlling density through cross-linking, crystallinity, and foaming tailors mechanical and barrier properties, while in nanotechnology high-porosity, low-density architectures provide tunable functional surfaces. Density measurement is thus a basic tool for identifying substances and predicting their behaviour. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research in chemistry and materials science, including the synthesis, characterisation, and physical properties of materials.
