Overview

A dental implant is a biocompatible fixture, typically made of titanium or titanium alloy, surgically placed into the jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth and support a prosthetic crown, bridge, or denture. Its function depends on osseointegration, the direct structural and functional bonding of living bone to the implant surface, which provides the stability needed to bear occlusal load; histologic and histomorphometric evaluation of integrated implants demonstrates how bone forms and remodels at the implant interface over time. Implant placement frequently requires adequate bone volume and quality, and where these are deficient, augmentation procedures such as sinus lifts and grafting with materials including hydroxyapatite, beta-tricalcium phosphate, and calcium phosphosilicate are used to build a sufficient foundation. Techniques continue to evolve, encompassing immediate-placement and socket-preservation approaches, alternative implant designs and surfaces, and strategies to manage failures of conventional two-stage implants, while surface modification, including the use of biological molecules to enhance integration, is an active area of investigation. Treatment planning relies on imaging such as cone-beam computed tomography to assess bone anatomy and adjacent structures. As a durable and functionally effective means of replacing lost teeth, dental implants restore mastication, speech, and appearance, and their study integrates oral and maxillofacial surgery, biomaterials, and bone biology around the goal of stable, long-lasting integration with the jaw.
