Mumps

Mumps is a contagious viral infection, typically causing fever and swollen salivary glands. The infection is most commonly seen in children, but can occur at any age and is usually spread through saliva or contact with infected mucus, and can be prevented through vaccination. Its significance lies in the fact that mumps can cause serious complications such as swelling of the brain, which can lead to permanent disability or even death. Treatment is aimed at relieving symptoms and includes pain relief and rest. Vaccination is the best protection against mumps, and is recommended as part of routine childhood immunization in many countries.
