Overview

Surgery is the branch of medicine that treats disease, injury, and deformity through operative manual and instrumental intervention on tissues and organs. Procedures are classified by intent (diagnostic, curative, palliative, reconstructive, or cosmetic), by urgency (elective versus emergency), and increasingly by access, ranging from open approaches to minimally invasive endoscopic, laser-assisted, and image-guided techniques. Operative practice rests on anaesthesia, asepsis, haemostasis, careful patient selection, and management of perioperative risk, including thromboembolism and procedure-specific complications. Studies in this area span several specialties: inferior turbinate and frontal sinus procedures and other otolaryngological operations, fetal surgery, bariatric surgery for morbid obesity and its nutritional sequelae, cardiac surgery with acute normovolaemic haemodilution, and ophthalmic procedures including femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery and retinal detachment repair. Reported work also addresses decision-making and technique selection, validated patient-reported outcome instruments such as the SNOT-22, multi-opinion-seeking behaviour before common procedures, tissue trauma from lens fragmentation patterns, and venous thromboembolism risk and its duration after orthopaedic surgery. Together these reflect the breadth of surgical innovation, outcome assessment, and complication management across disciplines. The journal publishes peer-reviewed surgical case reports, technique evaluations, and outcome studies.
