Overview

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterised by persistent difficulties in social communication and interaction together with restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviour, interests, or activities. Presentations vary widely in severity and profile, which is why the condition is conceptualised as a spectrum, and features typically emerge in early childhood. The underlying physiopathology is multifactorial, involving genetic and neurodevelopmental factors, and remains an active area of neuroscience inquiry into the brain mechanisms and theories that account for the phenotype. ASD frequently co-occurs with other health concerns, notably feeding and gastrointestinal problems, sleep disturbances, and emotional and behavioural difficulties, which affect quality of life and complicate care. Management is individualised and multidisciplinary, drawing on behavioural and developmental interventions, support for communication and feeding, attention to sleep, and emerging approaches such as neurofeedback. Dietary strategies, including elemental diets and gluten- and casein-free regimens, have been examined particularly where gastrointestinal symptoms are present, though evidence varies. Caregiver experience, stigma, and access to services also shape outcomes. Research spans the neurobiological basis of ASD, associated feeding, gastrointestinal, and sleep comorbidities, the evaluation of behavioural and nutritional interventions, and the role of emerging technologies, with the aim of improving identification, support, and well-being.
