Overview
Child nutrition concerns the dietary requirements that support growth, development, and health from infancy through adolescence, and the consequences of meeting or failing to meet them. Adequate intake of energy, protein, essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals is critical during these years because deficits can permanently impair linear growth, immune function, and cognitive development. Key concepts include exclusive breastfeeding in early infancy, timely and appropriate complementary feeding as solid foods are introduced, and the prevention of both undernutrition and overnutrition. Undernutrition manifests as stunting, wasting, and micronutrient deficiencies such as vitamin A deficiency, while moderate and severe acute malnutrition require structured therapeutic feeding and recovery monitoring. Nutritional vulnerability is heightened in children with chronic illness or complex conditions, including those undergoing stem cell transplantation or living with congenital heart disease, where targeted feeding strategies are needed. Maternal nutritional status and household, social, and economic factors strongly influence child outcomes, linking child nutrition to broader public health and to the double burden of malnutrition seen as populations face both deficiency and excess. Research in this field assesses nutritional status, feeding practices, determinants of malnutrition and recovery, and interventions designed to reduce stunting, wasting, and long-term metabolic and developmental risk.
