Overview

Polymer analysis is the systematic characterization of the composition, structure, and properties of polymeric materials, providing the data needed to relate molecular architecture to performance. It determines molecular weight and its distribution, chemical and monomer composition, chain microstructure and branching, crosslink density, crystallinity, and the presence of additives, fillers, or degradation products. Thermal and mechanical behavior are assessed alongside chemical resistance and stability under service conditions. Characterization relies on chromatographic methods such as size-exclusion and liquid chromatography, often coupled with mass spectrometry for compositional detail; spectroscopic techniques including infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance, and ultraviolet-visible methods; thermal analysis such as differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry; and physical tests including viscometry, microscopy, and gravimetric measurement of mass change. A significant focus is the study of synthesis and modification, for example graft copolymerization used to produce biodegradable polymers, and the characterization of polymer-anchored functional complexes. Durability analysis evaluates degradation mechanisms, including the response of fiber-reinforced plastics to chemical exposure, weathering, hydrolysis, and biodegradation. Sub-areas include structural and compositional analysis, molecular-weight determination, thermal and mechanical characterization, and failure or degradation assessment. The resulting understanding supports quality control, material selection, process optimization, and the design of polymers with targeted and reliable properties.
