Overview

Polymerization is the chemical process by which many small molecules, called monomers, react and join together to form large, chain-like or networked molecules known as polymers. It is the basis for producing a vast range of materials, from synthetic plastics, rubbers, fibres, adhesives and coatings to many biological macromolecules. The process generally proceeds by one of two broad mechanisms: addition (chain-growth) polymerization, in which unsaturated monomers add successively to a growing reactive chain, often initiated by light, heat or chemical initiators; and condensation (step-growth) polymerization, in which monomers link together with the elimination of a small molecule such as water. The conditions of polymerization, including the choice of monomer, initiator, catalyst, temperature and time, determine the resulting polymer's molecular size, structure and physical properties. Research in Polymer Science Research and related OpenAccessPub titles addresses polymerization across applications: studies examine photopolymerization of composite resins and how light source, distance and temperature affect the cured material's hardness, the use of acrylate polymers in enhanced oil recovery, the synthesis of hybrid monolithic columns for separating small molecules, and the preparation of conductive polymer nanocomposites. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to polymerization and polymer science.
