Overview

Anemia is a condition characterized by a reduced number of red blood cells or a lower-than-normal level of hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying protein within those cells, leading to diminished oxygen delivery to the body's tissues. Common symptoms include fatigue, weakness, pallor, shortness of breath, and dizziness. Anemia has many causes, including nutritional deficiencies such as iron, vitamin B12, or folate deficiency, chronic diseases, blood loss, inherited disorders, and impaired red-cell production. In the context of Preventive Medicine And Care, many forms of anemia, particularly nutritional and iron-deficiency anemia, can be reduced through screening, dietary improvement, supplementation, and management of underlying conditions, making prevention and early detection important public-health goals. Research published by the journal addresses anemia across diverse causes and populations. Work includes a molecular study of hepcidin gene polymorphisms and serum hepcidin levels in patients with anemia of chronic kidney disease, an observation of prolonged survival in Diamond-Blackfan anemia associated with an RPS19 mutation, and studies of micronutrient deficiency and its determinants in children. Additional research has examined hemoglobin thresholds in pregnancy associated with increased maternal or fetal risk. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to anemia, its causes, and its prevention.
