Overview

Antenatal care is the routine health care that women receive during pregnancy to monitor the wellbeing of mother and fetus and to prevent, detect, and manage potential complications. It typically comprises a scheduled series of visits that include measurement of weight and blood pressure, urine and blood testing, screening for infections and conditions such as anemia and gestational diabetes, ultrasound assessment of fetal growth, immunisation where indicated, nutritional and health counselling, and birth preparedness planning. As a core element of Preventive Medicine And Care, effective antenatal care is associated with safer pregnancies and improved maternal and newborn outcomes, and its uptake is shaped by access, education, distance to facilities, and the quality of services. Research in this area frequently examines the level of antenatal care utilisation and the factors that influence it. Studies in the journal's scope include an assessment of antenatal care service utilisation and associated factors among mothers in Gelemso Town, Ethiopia, and an examination of how mobile telephone communication affects use of antenatal services among expectant mothers in the Kyotera and Rakai districts of Uganda. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to preventive maternal health and antenatal care.
