Overview
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is an umbrella term for a group of progressive lung conditions that obstruct airflow and make breathing difficult, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. It develops from prolonged exposure to lung irritants such as cigarette smoke and environmental or occupational pollutants, and produces persistent symptoms including breathlessness, chronic cough, fatigue, and excess mucus production. COPD is a major and growing cause of disability and death worldwide and is characterized by airflow limitation that is largely irreversible. Diagnosis relies on spirometry, and care combines reduction of irritant exposure, pharmacological therapy, pulmonary rehabilitation, management of exacerbations, and interventional options in severe disease. Research published under this topic includes the relationship between microalbuminuria and hypoxemia in COPD patients, evaluation of comorbidities across disease phenotypes, development of a severity classification system using a health-insurance claims database, and spirometric assessment in people living with HIV on antiretroviral therapy. Additional work addresses symptomatic management such as the antitussive levodropropizine for cough, lung transplantation and bronchoscopic lung volume reduction with one-way valves in severe emphysema, and the broader respiratory and nutritional context of affected patients, reflecting the diagnostic, therapeutic, and rehabilitative scope of the field.
