Epidemiology is the study of the distribution and determinants of health-related states and events in defined populations, and the application of that knowledge to disease prevention and control. It quantifies how often disease occurs and in whom through measures of incidence, prevalence and mortality, identifies risk and protective factors through observational and analytical study designs, and addresses confounding, bias and causal inference. As the foundational science of public health, it underpins surveillance, outbreak investigation, screening programmes and evidence-based policy.
