Overview
Epidemiology is the study of the distribution and determinants of health-related states and events in defined populations, and the application of that knowledge to disease prevention and control. It quantifies how often disease occurs and in whom through measures of incidence, prevalence and mortality, identifies risk and protective factors through observational and analytical study designs, and addresses confounding, bias and causal inference. As the foundational science of public health, it underpins surveillance, outbreak investigation, screening programmes and evidence-based policy. Work in this area covers the epidemiology and histopathological pattern of thyroid disease in a hospital population, the epidemiology and management of seasonal influenza outbreaks in long-term care, temporal trends in syphilis and associated infections in five-year retrospective analyses, malaria and typhoid coinfection in a hospital cohort, the role of human papillomavirus in carcinogenesis, phylogenetic study of canine osteosarcoma, development of a population-based colorectal cancer screening programme, a systematic review of paediatric narcolepsy, coprological survey of ovine fasciolosis, and knowledge, attitude and practice surrounding pre-exposure prophylaxis. The journal publishes peer-reviewed epidemiological and population-health research spanning infectious disease, oncology and screening, applying surveillance, retrospective and survey methods to the distribution and control of disease.
