Overview

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a condition in which a blood clot forms within the venous system, encompassing deep vein thrombosis, where a clot develops in a deep vein, usually of the leg or pelvis, and pulmonary embolism, where a clot travels to and lodges in the arteries of the lungs. VTE is a major cause of illness and death, and its risk is increased by factors such as surgery, immobility, cancer, inherited or acquired clotting disorders, pregnancy, and acute illness.
