Overview
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a condition in which a blood clot forms within the venous system, encompassing deep vein thrombosis, where a clot develops in a deep vein, usually of the leg or pelvis, and pulmonary embolism, where a clot travels to and lodges in the arteries of the lungs. VTE is a major cause of illness and death, and its risk is increased by factors such as surgery, immobility, cancer, inherited or acquired clotting disorders, pregnancy, and acute illness. Recognising risk factors, signs, and symptoms is important because the condition can be prevented and treated with anticoagulation and other measures, while undetected clots can be life-threatening. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to venous thromboembolism and thrombosis published in Thrombosis and treatments and related OpenAccessPub journals. On-topic work includes a study examining how long patients remain at risk of venous thromboembolism after orthopaedic surgery, addressing a recognised high-risk setting and the duration of prophylaxis, and an investigation of COVID-19-induced changes in the fibrin network of pulmonary and renal microthrombi, which concerns clot formation in small vessels. Together with the journal's broader coverage of thrombosis, coagulation, and bleeding disorders, this material reflects the study of how venous clots form, the settings that raise risk, and the prevention and treatment of thromboembolic disease.
