Overview

Animal and veterinary sciences is the discipline devoted to the health, disease, and biology of animals and to the clinical and scientific means of caring for them. It brings together veterinary medicine and surgery with supporting fields such as pathology, microbiology, reproduction, immunology, and toxicology, serving companion animals, livestock, and other species through prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Research in this area encompasses veterinary oncology and pathology, including the investigation of neoplastic cells in bone marrow and the characterization of canine mammary tumors and osteosarcoma, and infectious disease, such as the antifungal susceptibility of dermatophytes affecting cats and dogs and the study of contagious bovine pleuropneumonia. Reproductive science is represented by work on postpartum performance in dairy cattle and the in-vitro maturation of bovine oocytes, while preventive medicine and immunology appear in assessments of vaccine responses in neonatal calves. The field also includes regenerative approaches to bone defects, the toxicological effects of environmental compounds on animal tissues, and comparative experimental models. Sub-areas include veterinary clinical practice, oncology and pathology, infectious and parasitic disease, reproductive biology, and immunology and preventive care. By integrating hands-on clinical care with diagnostic and experimental research across species, animal and veterinary sciences advance animal welfare, support productive husbandry, and contribute to comparative biomedical understanding.
