Overview

Air pollution and climate change are two of the biggest environmental issues of our times, and they are often closely linked. Air pollution occurs when harmful substances, such as chemicals and particles, are released into the air by human activities like burning fossil fuels. These pollutants can interact with the atmosphere and contribute to climate change, a long-term alteration of the earth's climate. Climate change impacts air quality through increased temperatures, which causes more ground-level ozone formation and other air pollutants to occur. This can create more severe air pollution events and an increased frequency of health hazards associated with air pollution. On the other hand, air pollution is also a major contributor to climate change, as the pollutants released into the atmosphere act as greenhouse gases, trapping heat and warming the planet. Reducing air pollution can help slow climate change, but also has other benefits, such as improved health for people living in areas with higher levels of air pollution.
