Overview

Pregnancy and birth encompass the period from conception, when a sperm fertilises an egg to form a zygote, through the development of the embryo and fetus in the uterus, to labour and delivery of the newborn. Pregnancy involves profound physiological changes in the mother's body to support fetal growth, and it is monitored through antenatal care that screens for and manages conditions affecting maternal and fetal health. Birth, or parturition, completes the process and carries its own risks and care needs. These milestones are central to Women's Reproductive Health, where the goals are healthy outcomes for both mother and child and the prevention of complications. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to pregnancy and birth published in Women's Reproductive Health and related OpenAccessPub journals. On-topic work includes an analysis of the hemoglobin concentration in pregnancy below which the risk of maternal or fetal adverse effects increases, a study of the level and determinants of antenatal care service utilization among mothers who recently gave birth, an examination of risk factors for fetal macrosomia, and a study addressing the costs of teen pregnancy. Together these articles reflect the maternal-health, antenatal-care, and obstetric-outcome themes that define the study of pregnancy and birth.
