Overview
Carbohydrate metabolism is the set of biochemical processes by which the body breaks down, builds, stores, and uses Carbohydrates, principally to supply energy. Dietary Carbohydrates are digested into simple sugars such as glucose, which cells oxidize through pathways including glycolysis and the citric acid cycle to generate adenosine triphosphate, the molecule that powers most cellular work. The body also stores glucose as glycogen and can synthesize glucose through gluconeogenesis when intake is low, with hormones such as insulin and glucagon tightly regulating blood sugar. Disruptions in carbohydrate metabolism underlie disorders such as diabetes mellitus, making this area central to nutrition and metabolic health. Research relevant to carbohydrate metabolism in this collection includes work on the impact of nutrients on diabetes and on the feasibility and utility of continuous glucose monitors in elite football, both of which examine glucose handling in health and disease, as well as a study of food intake patterns and food energy density in obese older patients achieving successful weight loss and maintenance. Together these reflect the practical stakes of how the body manages dietary sugars. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to carbohydrate metabolism, glucose regulation, and metabolic health.
