Scope and study assessment
- Subject fit. Work centered on business, administration or general technology without a substantive contribution to sports or exercise medicine falls outside the scientific remit.
- Research contribution. Promotional content and unsupported health or performance claims do not constitute a scholarly contribution.
- Assessment by design. Methodological limitations are evaluated separately from subject fit. Small, null, qualitative, self-report, basic and computational studies are eligible when their contribution and claims are appropriately supported.

Evidence should be interpreted in relation to its methods and population: a laboratory study of training adaptation is not a clinical trial, and a finding in an injured cohort does not transfer untested to a healthy one. Published research informs practice. A single study does not establish a training prescription, an injury-prevention guarantee, a rehabilitation protocol or a return-to-play rule, and nothing published here is individual medical or performance advice.

Reporting and research integrity
In sports and exercise medicine the handling of the participants is part of the science. A reader cannot judge a training study without knowing who trained, for how long and from what baseline, and an athlete is often identifiable from far less than a name.
Participants, ethics and consent
- For human research, report ethics approval or applicable exemption and informed consent or an authorized waiver from the responsible ethics body.
- Written consent for publication is required for identifiable case material, including photographs and imaging of identifiable athletes.
- Animal studies must follow institutional and national guidelines.
- Competing interests are disclosed in full, financial and non-financial. Studies funded by manufacturers of equipment, devices or supplements must demonstrate independent rights of data analysis and interpretation.
Reporting standards
- CONSORT for randomized controlled trials.
- STROBE for observational studies.
- PRISMA for systematic reviews.
- ARRIVE for animal research.
- Participant characteristics, training status, sex and age distribution, sample size and the statistical approach are reported so that a finding can be placed in the population it came from.
Registration, data and preprints
- Interventional clinical trials must be registered in an accepted public trial registry at or before the first participant provides consent for enrollment. The registry name, registration number, and registration date must be reported in the manuscript.
- Every empirical research manuscript must include a data-availability statement. Raw data deposition in a public repository is required for experimental studies, and code sharing is encouraged for computational work.
- Preprint posting is encouraged and does not affect consideration. Authors disclose the preprint DOI, and the journal version becomes the version of record on publication.

What does the Journal of Sports and Exercise Medicine publish?
JSEM publishes research in sports injury medicine, exercise physiology, rehabilitation, biomechanics and motor control, and exercise and physical activity in health and disease across athletic and general populations. These five domains have equal standing. Studies may include inactive participants, and findings may transfer across sports. Assessment distinguishes subject fit from the strength of evidence and matches the design to its claims.
