Submit your research to JSEM

Journal of Sports and Exercise Medicine welcomes submissions throughout the year from researchers, clinicians, and multidisciplinary teams working across sports and exercise medicine.

Regular submissions

Regular submissions are accepted throughout the year. There is no deadline to meet and no window to wait for: a manuscript is assessed when it arrives, and published when it is ready.

All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal’s scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review. Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request.

Where the journal is seeking work

Work in any of the journal’s five core domains is welcome. These are the questions the editors would particularly like to see answered, because the literature in each is thin relative to how often the question is asked in practice.

  • Sports injury medicine and prevention. Screening tests with a demonstrated predictive value; injury surveillance in recreational and youth sport, where most injuries happen and least is recorded; concussion assessment outside elite settings.
  • Exercise physiology and the response to training. Field measurement validated against laboratory reference; load and recovery monitoring that predicts something; environmental physiology in populations that actually train in those conditions.
  • Rehabilitation and return to sport. Criteria-based progression compared against time-based; functional outcome measures with established reliability; reinjury as a reported outcome rather than an assumption.
  • Biomechanics and motor control. Kinetic-chain and proximal-contribution hypotheses tested rather than proposed; running and gait mechanics outside the treadmill; equipment and footwear evaluated in use.
  • Exercise medicine. Exercise prescribed as treatment with clinical endpoints; dose and safety in clinical populations; physical activity in people for whom the standard guidance was never designed.

The full scope, with its boundaries

What to send

Original research, clinical trials, systematic reviews, meta-analyses and scoping reviews, methods and validation studies, case reports and case series that carry a novel insight, hypothesis and perspective articles, and brief communications.

A study is judged on whether its design answers its question, not on how large it is. Single-site studies, laboratory experiments and small controlled trials are in scope, and recreational, youth, masters and clinical participants are as welcome as elite athletes.

How to submit

  1. Check the fit. Three questions on the Aims and Scope page settle whether the journal is the right place for the manuscript.
  2. Prepare the manuscript. The Instructions for Authors set out what each article type needs, including the reporting standard for the design.
  3. Submit by one route. ManuscriptZone, the simple form, or the editorial office. Authors must use only one submission route for the same manuscript.
